The social introvert
Jun 21, 2022
During a recent meeting with a client, I was asked whether I see myself as an introvert or an extrovert. Now, first of all, I don’t really like labels that define people as A or B as context has a lot to do with the answer that one will give. Humans tend to be social chameleons and adapt to the environment that they are in.
Nevertheless, I thought about my answer and said; ‘I am a social introvert’. The look of confusion was funny. I have no idea where the term came from but it fits the explanation about my own personality.
I am comfortable being the centre of attention within the right context, but would not strive to be the centre of attention. I am also equally comfortable on my own, as long as I have something to do. The aspect that I have been understanding more about myself is that I enjoy working alone but in a room where there is activity going on. It doesn’t have to be much but I do find a room filled with silence disturbing and less productive. Hence the term ‘social introvert’. I like to be surrounded by people but alone in my thoughts and internal dialogue.
